Frequently Asked Questions
Sleep apnea occurs when the airways become blocked or collapses during the night. The most common cause of sleep apnea is excessive weight and obesity. However, other causes could be large tonsils, a small jaw, a large overbite or a large neck.
You can get tested for sleep apnea either through laboratory based sleep tests or home based sleep tests. If you choose to do the latter, at the convenience of your own home, a device attached to you while you sleep will monitor your breathing, oxygen levels and breathing effort.
Simply attach the sensors to your body as instructed and start the sleep test by pressing the central button when you are in bed. When you wake up in the morning, remove the sensors. The device may then be returned by mail or back to one of our clinics for an analysis.
Once you have completed a full nights sleep of 4 hours or more and have sent the testing kit back to us, please allow 7 - 14 days for the results to come back from the lab.
Within the report, the Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) and oxygen desaturation levels are the primary indicators of OSA. AHI is the number of apneas recorded during the study per hour of sleep whilst the latter measures reductions in blood oxygen levels. We will call you to explain and discuss your results once they come in.
